The oldest in a family of 14 children, Gilbert Bekkatla was commercial fishing with his father by the age of nine, leaving very little time for school.
Working hard out on northern lakes and for awhile on the railroad could bring a pay cheque, but at age 22 Gilbert was losing hope to live. There were times when he'd fallen into the lake and thought, "Why don't I just let go of the boat and be done with it?"
A few years later and married to Laura, through the near death of their young son, Gilbert found his "life jacket" and lasting hope for living. Leaving a career in carpentry, Gilbert went back to fishing - this time a new kind among his own Denesuline First Nations people.
